Student Accommodation in Edinburgh

There are loads of great places to live as a student in Edinburgh. Here is some information about the popular student areas that should help you make your choice when you decide where to live in second year.

Bruntsfield
Bruntsfield is slightly further away from the University of Edinburgh (20min walk) than Marchmont, but closer to Napier. Bruntsfield is less densely student-populated, which could be a pro or a con.

Marchmont
Marchmont has an extremely high proportion of students. Adjoining the Meadows, Marchmont is a stone's throw away from Edinburgh University and is on bus routes to King's Buildings. The quality of flats in Marchmont varies enormously. Being popular, Marchmont does have a price tag both in rent and local shops.

Newington
Newington is a big area so distances to unis vary as does the quality of the flats and the price. Generally Newington is popular with Edinburgh Uni students looking for larger flats (5+ people), or for cheaper rent.

New Town
Although not great for any of the campuses, New Town remains a popular place to live for those who have deep enough pockets for the rent! The impressive Georgian architecture and expansive rooms are huge selling points. Perhaps more suitable for third or fourth year.

Old Town
Old Town is popular with Edinburgh University students, due to its proximity to the unions and George Sqaure. This means that there is lots to do in the area although prices are not the cheapest.

Tollcross
Tollcross is central and reasonably price. Its proximity to Lothian Road means that there is access to plenty of shops bars and clubs. Tollcross is popular with students at Napier University.

Where to find Edinburgh Student Flats
The flat hunting season is late in Edinburgh with many of the flats released at the beginning of Easter. Unfortunately this clashes with exams, so expect a few stressful weeks. There are loads of places to find flats, some are let by the Universities themselves so keep an eye out for posters. Lettingweb is a good resource but listings take a while to be updated so you may find that flats are gone before you have a chance to look round. Gumtree has quite a few, often from private landlords.
